JOB VACANCY - Latest News
We offer antenatal care in conjunction with the Community Midwifery Team, who hold regular clinics in the surgery. We encourage shared care between the doctor and the Midwife, and you will therefore be seen regularly throughout the course of pregnancy.
Please note that this practice does not encourage home births due to the distance to the nearest hospital with obstetric facilities.
Our nurse-led clinic provides regular monitoring, support and advice to all patients with chronic chest conditions, and aims to ensure that appropriate treatments are in place to minimise symptoms and improve quality of life as much as possible. Patients are normally reviewed annually, but will be seen more frequently if their condition and symptoms require it.
The Lead nurse for this clinic is Ruth Parkinson and the Lead GP is Dr Scott Perkins.
We review mums and babies at approximately 8 weeks after the birth, usually on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 14:30 and 15:30. New mums will be sent an information card giving details of their postnatal appointment and their baby's first development check. This appointment will be with either Dr Cusack or Dr Lloyd.
This is also the time when we carry out the first course of baby immunisations.
Care Navigator & Memory Loss Advisor
Carolyn Pym is a Memory Loss Advisor and Care Navigator to undertake memory assessments with our patients and also to support patients within the practice. She can access advice and support patients with memory concerns. Carolyn has previously worked with a large national charity as a dementia advisor and has a range of knowledge and experience to advise and signpost to relevant services in the community as diverse as social groups, benefits information, legal advice and any queries that are non-clinical.
If you have any concerns regarding your memory or a family member please contact your GP to arrange an appointment to see Carolyn at the surgery or within your own home. Please note Carolyn can be contacted via the surgery telephone line and only works Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Women in the appropriate age group will receive regular reminders to make an appointment with the surgery for a smear test to be carried out – if you receive a reminder, please contact the surgery to book an appointment with the practice nurse.
If you do not wish to have a cervical smear test performed, please let us know so that our records can be updated.
Child Immunisations are carried out by our practice nurses, usually on Thursdays between 08:45 and 12:30. Please click here to see a schedule of child immunisations.
Sue Warren is our attached counsellor who is able to provide NHS counselling services to our patients. Appointments are in very great demand and patients who are referred by their doctor are usually seen initially by Pam Brady, our Gateway Worker, to assess the nature of their problem and ensure that they receive the most appropriate service.
Diabetes services are provided by Ruth Parkinson, chronic disease management nurse in association with Dr Paula Cusack (diabetic lead GP)
Diabetic reviews require a 30-minute appointment with the nurse. It is important to note that all patients attending diabetic clinic are required to have blood tests taken at least 2 weeks before their clinic appointment.
Our GPs and nursing staff are trained and experienced in providing comprehensive family planning services, including the fitting of contraceptive implants and IUCDs (coils). Our Lead GPs are Dr Lloyd and Dr Cusack, and the Lead nurse is Margaret Symonds.
Patients wishing to discuss family planning matters should book an appointment with either Margaret Symonds or their GP.
If you require emergency contraception, please contact the practice as quickly as possible to obtain advice, as treatment is less successful as time elapses. Patients requiring emergency contraception will always be seen on the day they contact the practice.
You could be eligible for a FREE NHS Health Check. The check is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. We run a specialised clinic for patients who are diagnosed with coronary heart disease or who have factors putting them at risk of heart disease, with input from both doctors and practice nurses. Your doctor will initiate tests and investigations, and ensure you are prescribed medication where necessary. The practice nurse is responsib
le for arranging regular monitoring, and will help with lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise and smoking cessation.
All patients are called annually for an assessment which includes blood tests, and the results are sent to your GP who will arrange further review if necessary.
Memory Loss Service
Carolyn Pym has recently joined the practice as a Memory Loss Advisor and Care Navigator to undertake memory assessments with our patients and also to support patients within the practice. She can access advice and support patients with memory concerns. Carolyn has previously worked with a large national charity as a dementia advisor and has a range of knowledge and experience to advise and signpost to relevant services in the community as diverse as social groups, benefit information, legal advice and any queries that are non-clinical.
Our prescribing nurse can treat and prescribe a variety of conditions:
- Sore throats, ear ache
- Coughs, colds/flu, sinusitis
-Rashes, infected wounds, minor injuries
- Headlice, insect bites and stings
If you are unsure please speak to a Receptionist who will be able to point you in the right direction.
Please note; children under 6 and pregnant women are not suitable for a minor illness clinic and may be required to see a GP.
We perform minor surgery on a regular basis and we are equipped to deal with a wide range of minor surgical problems such as:
Some conditions may not be suitable for treatment in Primary Care – your doctor will be able to advise you whether your condition can be treated within the surgery and, if not, will arrange for you to be referred for specialist treatment. Minor surgery is performed by Dr Scott Perkins.
Our practice nurses are able to offer vaccinations to patients travelling abroad to help prevent against a wide range of diseases. We can also offer advice on malaria prophylaxis. Please note that, because some vaccinations require multiple doses and in order to gain maximum immunity, we recommend that patients consult us at least 8 weeks before they are due to travel. More information is available from the above tab.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.
There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
Travel Health Questionnaire
To help us offer the appropriate advice, please fill out the online form before coming to see the nurse. After filling out the form please ring the surgery to book an appointment.
Travelling in Europe
If you are travelling to Europe the EU has published useful information for travellers on the European website.
Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
